It’s Already Christmas?! - Why time passes so quickly

⚠️ This entry is already over one year old. It may no longer be up to date. Opinions may have changed. When I wrote this post, I was only 18 years old!

I know not all of my readers celebrate Christmas, but that’s not really what this is about. I want to investigate the reason why it feels like time flies by.

It’s December again. It still feels like August was only a week ago in August and January maybe a month ago. I remember how I made fun of the Christmas stuff at the supermarket in September and it seems like it was only yesterday. Time just goes by so fast!

It was a year of highs and lows for me. I have reached important milestones in my life, but there were also some things that made me lose my faith. Even now, almost two months after the most serious event, I still can’t quite believe it. And that it is almost two months ago shows me how quickly time passes.

However, I believe that the feeling that time flies by so quickly is only present in retrospect. Isn’t there still some moments where you get bored and wish the watch would tick twice as fast?

Especially when I think back to my school days, mainly before entering the final grades and where holidays meant relaxation and not learning, I always longed for holidays and wished they would be there a little faster. And when they finally arrived, they were over much too soon. So that feeling is there when we feel good.

On the other hand, however, I must also think about the preparation for the final examination, where I hoped to have a few more days before the exams. So stress seems to make time pass quickly too.

In fact, everybody knows that time always passes at the same speed from a physical point of view (unless you fly through space at the speed of light). It just shows again how much our feelings are misleading us and we should not always be so sure that our feelings are not just deceiving us.

All those who celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of Jesus Christ, happy holidays and a blessed festival!
